La Liga launches documentary featuring US fans

La Liga North America is launching an English-language documentary series centred on the stories and lives of La Liga fans in the US, reports, www.sportspromedia.com/.

The 12-episode series dubbed the 'United States of La Liga' is expected to air in August, with the first completed episode featuring a Deportivo la Coruña fan from New York City.

La Liga, Spain's top-flight soccer division, entered into a 15-year joint venture partnership with Relevent Sports Group last year. The partnership aims at promoting the league across the US and Canada.

The documentary series will be part of a portfolio of original La Liga content such as traditional matchday analysis and magazine shows.

Speaking to SportBusiness, La Liga North America chief executive Boris Gartner said: "We're putting a lot of effort on the content side, between hardcore fans [the US Hispanic audience] who are following four or five matches a weekend and know what it exactly what is going on. For them, we're looking to get the product in front of them: recaps, previews, all that kind of content.

"What we want to do is to go completely outside of our soccer influence. If we really want to grow, we need to go after non-hardcore fans in both Spanish and in English. As you start moving towards that, you need more entertainment [and] more human stories in the new wave of sports documentaries."

In conjunction with production companies in Los Angeles, La Liga wants to ensure it shines a light on teams beyond the traditional powerhouses of Real Madrid and Barcelona, allowing fans to discover the league's untold stories.

He continued: "It's very easy to tell a [Lionel] Messi story that people can latch onto. But how do we uncover the stories for the other 18 teams."
