Koeman urges Southampton to give 'good reaction' against Everton

Southampton boss Ronald Koeman is eager for his team to bounce back to the winners' list when they take on Everton this weekend.

The Saints host the Toffees at St Mary's on Saturday on the back of five-straight defeats, four of which have come in the Premier League, to see them fall to fifth on the table.

With Roberto Martinez's Everton coming to town, Koeman is aware it will be a footballing battle for his team and is hopeful they can respond in a positive manner.

"First, we have to give a good reaction," said Koeman when speaking to Southampton's YouTube channel in the wake of Tuesday night's Capital One Cup loss to League One club Sheffield United.

"We were very disappointed about the performance but it's nice we have another game so quick and that's this Saturday.

"The style of Everton is more different, it's more football in my opinion. It doesn't mean it's easier but the way they [Burnley and Sheffield United] play in the last two games was maybe more difficult for us.

"Everton like to play football, the coach is a fan of good, positive attacking football and I admire him because he is doing a great job in England.

"They had a difficult start but I think in the last few weeks they have played better and had more confidence. Some players are now back from injuries."

Southampton have not won since beating Leicester City 2-0 on November 8 following a brilliant beginning to the season and Koeman admits the confidence of his squad may have taken a little bit of a dip during their subpar run of late.

"Always the players have more confidence and more belief in themselves if you are winning but now it's a bit different," he added.

"You know you need to bring the same character and the same spirit to win the battles. Against Sheffield United it was the first time we didn't. But we have to keep going and we have to learn."
