The Athletic reports Benfica made an attempt to sign Phillips at the end of the transfer window.

Benfica made an offer for the defender, but following the injury to Ibrahima Konate, Klopp decided to keep the 25-year-old.

Benfica wanted to sign Phillips on a season-long loan.

Benfica coach Roger Schmidt wanted Phillips after working with the defender at Stuttgart during his 2019-20 loan.
