Aitor Karanka has revealed that Jose Mourinho taught him to be honest during their time together at Real Madrid.

The Middlesbrough worked under the new Manchester United manager with the Spanish giants between 2010 and 2013 and suggests it was a great learning curve alongside the Portuguese tactician.

"With Mourinho I learned the value of honesty; the need to explain what was best for the team," Karanka told Marca.

"Sometimes coaches tell you what you want to hear but over time you realise that it's not real.

"With him I learned to say what you thought for the good of the team."
