Portsmouth boss Steve Cotterill remains hopeful Kanu will sign a new contract at Fratton Park. Pompey began life in the Championship with a 2-0 defeat away to Coventry on Saturday.

Talks are ongoing with the veteran Nigerian striker and Cotterill could have the former Arsenal frontman available for Saturday's clash with Reading.

Cotterill said: "He'd like to be playing for us and I would like him here. We could have done with Kanu's influence. He could have caused Coventry a few more problems."
