Manchester United have ended interest in Juventus striker Mario Mandzukic.
The Daily Mail says he was in talks over a move to replace Romelu Lukaku as he closes in on a move to Inter Milan.
But the Red Devils now face the window slamming shut without a replacement being secured after their interest in Mandzukic was halted due to his high wage demands.
They considered using Mandzukic as part of a swap deal involving Lukaku and Paulo Dybala, but when that collapsed they were put off by Juve's high valuation of the Croatian in a stand-alone transfer.
It is claimed United had a £15m fee in mind to secure Mandzukic, 33, with Juve's asking price significantly higher leading to the deal failing to materialise.
