Jansson: More exciting playing for Brentford than Sweden

Brentford captain Pontus Jansson has no regrets retiring from international football.

The Swede says the thought of turning out for the national team no longer excites him.

The former Leeds stopper told SVT via Bold: "I do not know. It just gets silly when I stopped a few months ago. But I have not thought in those lanes. I do not think so. But the last thing Janne (Andersson) said to me this summer was that I could always call if I wanted to join again.

"Honestly, no. I have already experienced one World Cup and two European Championships. I loved the national team, but I do not have the feeling in my stomach about national team football that I have about club football."

Jansson, who has 27 caps for his country, concedes playing for Sweden no longer excites him and instead is focused on the Bees and keeping the club in the Premier League this season.

He added: "I do not know if it is me who is unique or stupid, but I do not get butterflies in the stomach for the national team anymore. I have to be honest."

So far this season, Jansson has been an ever-present for Brentford manager Thomas Frank - including Saturday night's exciting 3-3 draw with Liverpool.

The 30 year-old is in his second year with Brentford after joining Leeds in 2019. His deal expires at the end of this season, though it includes a 12 month option.

After their draw with Liverpool, Brentford now sit in ninth place on the Premier League in the club's first ever campaign in the competition.
