Former Manchester United player Brian McClair has claimed that “Jaffa Cakes" were one of the reasons why Sir Alex Ferguson was so successful in transforming the club following his arrival as manager.
The impact of managers is often touted in results and player signings, but Ferguson is one of those who is also credited with removing a culture of drinking and bad diets from the club.
"In '92, SAF brought in Trevor Lea a nutritional guru, his first act was to confiscate the custard creams, bourbons & choc digestives," McClair, who later became United's academy director, said on Twitter.
"He had a Jiffy bag from which he pulled the performance enhancing superfood that was key to Utd's success over the next 16 years!!!"
Supposedly, United's players were told to eat multiple jaffa cakes on days where they were training and playing.
