INTERNATIONAL CHAMPIONS CUP: 5 big issues facing Manchester City

With Manchester City in Australia for the International Champions Cup, we thought it the perfect time to delve into their problems ahead of the 2015/16 season.

Here are the 5 big issues for Man City as they prepare for the Premier League campaign on the Gold Coast and in Melbourne.

1. Can Vincent Kompany rediscover his commanding best?

A major issue City fans will be questioning is whether or not captain Vincent Kompany can reclaim his very best form.

The prominent Belgian centre-back was restricted to just 23 Premier League starts last season due to varying calf, hamstring and glute injuries.

His influence was well below what it has been in previous campaigns, particularly when he was rated in the top few centre-halves in the world when guiding the club to the 2012 and 2014 Premier League titles.

Kompany had a nice little break earlier in the summer before returning early to pre-season training in a bid to have himself in tip-top shape for the 2015/16 campaign.

With Kompany fully fit alongside expensive signing Eliaquim Mangala or veteran Martin Demichelis, City fans can expect their skipper to be back at his authoritative best and will be interested to see how he fares in the early pre-season games against Melbourne City, Roma and Real Madrid.

2. Have City overpaid for Raheem Sterling?

Another enormous topic among the Citizens faithful is the transfer fee paid for Raheem Sterling.

The £49million paid to Liverpool for the 20-year-old winger is the most ever paid for an English player which immediately asks the question: 'Will he be worth it?'.

City have obviously forked out for potential but it is a huge risk considering the player has scored just 18 goals in 95 Premier League appearances for a total of 23 from 129 outings for the Reds.

There is no doubting that Sterling is an extremely talented player but does he have the desire and competitiveness to make the grade at the Etihad Stadium?

City fans will be quick to jump on the England international's back if he doesn't perform early in his new habitat but hopefully that is not the case as the two-time Premier League champions look to return to the winner's' dais with a record signing at the fore.

Sterling will be truly unveiled in sky blue on the tour down under and expectant City supporters will be eager for him to show plenty of the dazzling pace and skill that led to his record transfer fee.

3. Which City youngsters can give Pellegrini food for thought in pre-season?

Club owners have spent £200million on the City Football Academy which has been designed to be breeding ground for future City stars.

The Sheikh Mansour regime has seen an enormous amount of money spent on top players such as Kompany, Yaya Toure, David Silva, Sergio Aguero, Samir Nasri, Wilfried Bony and now Sterling.

But when will City's homegrown players be given an opportunity?

Last season, only one player under the age of 23 - Jose Angel Pozo - played league football while the only Englishmen in the squad were James Milner, Scott Sinclair, Frank Lampard and Joe Hart, of which three have now departed.

City surely cannot continue to spend the way they do if they want good stability in the future so need to start blooding players from the Elite Development Squad like Rony Lopes, Thierry Ambrose, Cameron Humphreys, George Evans, Kelechi Iheanacho and Jason Denayer.

Sure, they don't need to be given regular game time or even to start but Manuel Pellegrini has to begin rearing these youngsters in a senior environment, starting with this pre-season tour, if City are to experience sustained success.

4. Can Yaya recapture his best?

Another City star who at times looked below his best last term was Yaya Toure.

The powerful Ivorian midfielder is regarded as one of the finest players in his position in world football but looked bereft of motivation and intent during the 2014/15 campaign.

Toure, who was also continually linked with an Etihad exit leading into the European summer, would love nothing more than to prove his detractors wrong next term and will no doubt be chomping at the bit to kick things off with a big pre-season.

Australia would be a great platform for the four-time African Footballer of the Year to begin his mini renaissance and Aussie fans will be hoping he can recreate his world-class form during his stay down under.

5. Will we see Enes Unal?

City recently signed a kid by the name of Enes Unal from Bursaspor.

The prolific Turkish striker is certainly not a household name but comes to City with enormous wraps.

Unal, 18, is the youngest player to score in Turkey's top flight and scored 182 goals in 110 appearances for Bursaspor's reserves team.

He is not expected to make an immediate impact in England but we are hoping he can show some glimpses of his immense potential when City take on Melbourne, Roma and Real Madrid in the great southern land.
