David Beckham's Major League Soccer (MLS) expansion franchise Inter Miami is locked in a trademark dispute with Italian club Inter Milan over the use of "Inter" in the US, reports, www.sportspromedia.com/.
In 2014, Inter Milan filed a US Patent and Trademark application to make "Inter" its exclusive brand in the US. Inter Milan are hugely popular in the States, having taken part in numerous pre-season tours and having their matches shown weekly on ESPN+.
In conjunction with the MLS, a claim of opposition has been filed in regard to the Milan club's exclusive use of "Inter", according to a legal document filed by the league and obtained by ProSoccerUSA.
In the statement, MLS said: "Because of the widespread use of the term 'Inter' in soccer, the relevant consumers do not associate the term 'Inter' with one soccer team; 'Inter' by itself is not a source indicator in connection with goods and services associated with soccer."
The filing continued by stating that: "MLS will be damaged by the registration sought by Applicant [Inter Milan] because such a registration would prevent registration of the term 'Inter' with other wording upon a showing of acquired distinctiveness in connection with a soccer team."
A response to the case from the US Patent and Trademark Office is expected by 4th May.
