IK Start are counting on a windfall from Kris Ajer's departure from Celtic.
Leicester City and AC Milan are among clubs keen on the Norway defender.
Start are currently £2 million in debt and have stated they will run out of money by June.
And any sale would mean a huge windfall for the club who sold him for just £650,000.
IK Start owner Robin Reed told the Daily Record: "Our job is to do what we can to make the club financially sustainable. As for a sale of Kristoffer Ajer, I think that would be able to help us long-term.
"If we got money from his sale, we would be able to use the money from his transfer to our partners and others who have helped us out during this difficult time.
"So far, his possible transfer has only been speculation, but I think football is beginning to return to normal and Kristoffer is clearly in the spotlight for many clubs."
