Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe has revealed that he asked his players to find a way to win during extra-time of their penalty shoot-out win over Preston North End.
The score was levelled at 1-1 after full-time and at 2-2 after additional time in the Capital Onee Cup third round tie, before the Cherries eventually won 3-2 on penalties.
"It's a big test, if you're not playing week in week out, to withstand that kind of spell playing," Howe told BBC Radio Solent.
"We were having to converse our energy in the last stages of the game, but I'm delighted to come through and be in the hat for the next round.
"I said to the lads in extra-time: 'We need to find a way to win'.
"If that wasn't in extra-time, we would take the penalty shootout.
"Feds showed what a top class goalkeeper he is with some great saves.
"A few of the other lads showed really good bottle to take their penalties cleanly."
