Relegated Hull City have entered talks with Paul Hart about the manager's post.
The Mirror says the Tigers have looked at Hart's record of fire-fighting at clubs like Portsmouth and Crystal Palace and think he could fit the bill as they try to bounce back to the Premier League at the first attempt, despite their cash problems.
Hart is a free agent after guiding Palace to safety in the Championship and he is keen to find a club closer to his base in the Midlands.
He was in talks with Coventry about their vacancy but was overlooked when Aidy Boothroyd was offered the job. Palace would also like to keep him, but that seems a long shot now.
Hull supremo Adam Pearson has just settled a pay-off with former boss Phil Brown and is looking for a full-time manager.
Iain Dowie still has some support at the KC Stadium, but Hart has now edged ahead of other contenders for the post, including Gary Speed, whose lack of experience worries some at the club.
