Hughes surprised Lovren did not see red as Liverpool edge Stoke

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes suggested Dejan Lovren should have been sent off for Liverpool on Sunday.

The Croatian defender was booked when he was involved in an aerial clash with Mame Biram Diouf five minutes into the second half of the Potters' eventual 1-0 defeat at the Britannia Stadium.

During the post-match press conference, Hughes indicated that the visitors perhaps should have been a man down after Lovren caught his player with an errant elbow.

"I don't know, I haven't seen it again, but if the referee felt it was worthy of a yellow card for an elbow he was fortunate not to get a red under those circumstances," he said.

In the end, however, Liverpool came away with all three points after Philippe Coutinho produced a superb strike from more than 25 yards to beat Jack Butland in stunning fashion.
