Huddersfield boss Lee Clark is determined to hold onto England U19 goalkeeper Alex Smithies.
Sunderland are the latest side to be mentioned in connection with the 18-year-old, who has also attracted interest from Chelsea, Everton, Tottenham, Portsmouth and QPR.
"We have to convince him he is better staying here in the early part of his career," he told BBC Radio Leeds.
"Eventually he'll go right to the very top - hopefully that's with Huddersfield."
He added: "He is an outstanding footballer and young man. He's a terrific kid. We want to keep him here."
