Howe hails 'desperate' Newcastle after comeback win over Tranmere

Goals on either side of half-time have helped Newcastle United avoid an upset against Tranmere Rovers in the Carabao Cup.

The visiting Magpies won the match 2-1 after a first-half scare at Prenton Park.

Newcastle controlled the game but fell behind when Elliott Nevitt was teed up.

Toon skipper Jamal Lascelles equalised just before half-time despite playing with a broken nose.

Chris Wood then put the visitors ahead shortly after the break, heading in a cross from Kieran Trippier.

Speaking after the game, manager Eddie Howe was delighted his side's commitment to victory.

"We had to really grind out the win. It was a tough end to the game," Howe said. "We had to be physical with our defending. That last part of the game pleased me the most.

"We take set-pieces where they come. They were well-worked and planned. Tranmere were committed and we had to match that. Credit to the players because they did. The two goals came from Kieran Trippier's quality of deliveries.

"We're really happy to get through. We had to pick a team we felt could get through the tie off the back of a game we felt we had given everything. We had to stand up and be counted.

"I thought our captain, Jamaal Lascelles was heroic in his defending as well. He responded like the captain he is. He led by example and put his body on the line. He didn't want to come off but we had to protect him at that stage.

"We had a lot of the ball so had to be creative to open them up. We didn't do that enough so that will be something we go back and review.

"Chris Wood has performed really well since he's joined us. It's great for us to see. His movement is very good. We ideally wanted to protect Trippier but you know the difference he can make and he's won us the game with those two deliveries. Also how we defended the set-pieces too - that's just as pleasing as the attacking ones.

"We know that responsibility is on our shoulders. We were desperate to go through. We want to take every game with the same seriousness and we will try to win everything we compete in."
