Hodgson urges Liverpool striker Sturridge, Arsenal attacker Welbeck to prove fitness ahead of Euro2016

England manager Roy Hodgson has called on Daniel Sturridge and Danny Welbeck to prove their fitness ahead of the summer's European Championships.

Both players have missed out on the majority of the current season with respective injuries and have recently returned to full fitness.

Hodgson is keen for the Liverpool striker and Arsenal attacker to get a run of games under their belt at the end of the season so he can take them to Euro2016 without hesitation.

Hodgson said: "…I would like people like him [Sturridge] and Danny Welbeck to make certain that in the four or five weeks that remain in the season to get as big a build-up as they possibly can of fitness, conditioning and match play, as well as training, so that they can convince me they are once again at the very, very height of their powers.

"I don't see any reason at the moment to doubt the pair of them or their ability and capacity to challenge and to show us they're the best people for the job.

"But the next few weeks are important for those two because I'd like to see them getting a bit more match play and fitness under their belts."

Hodgson is expected to name his final squad for the tournament in France on May 12.
