England coach Roy Hodgson is seeking a replacement for the axed Stuart Pearce.
The People says Hodgson has named his former Fulham assistant Ray Lewington as his England No.2 for the Euro 2012 finals but both he and the FA want a younger former England player to join the set-up as well.
He does not want Alan Shearer, who has been touted inside the FA, and neither does he believe Phil Neville is ready for such a role.
Manchester United legend Paul Ince, who played for Hodgson at Inter Milan, has also been mentioned.
