Hodgson eager for Man Utd young gun Rashford to be given time to follow Rooney, Beckham, Scholes

England manager Roy Hodgson is hoping that Manchester United starlet Marcus Rashford will not fall victim to the hype created by the media.

Hodgson wants the 18-year-old to be given a chance to develop in the same way previous promising English talents Raheem Sterling, Ross Barkley, Wayne Rooney, David Beckham and Paul Scholes were afforded.

Rashford recently shot to fame after scoring four goals in his first two senior starts for the Red Devils.

Hodgson said: "My hope, and it is a vain hope, is he will be allowed to develop in peace and it won't suddenly be a question of 'you're going to be the next Cristiano Ronaldo' - or every time he has two or three bad games he's a flash in the pan.

"Let's hope the lad gets a chance to develop in the same way as Raheem Sterling, Ross Barkley, Wayne Rooney, David Beckham and Paul Scholes.

"Let's hope he gets the same chance to develop at Manchester United and hopefully for England as all those guys in the past and he isn't going to be lifted up so high that the inevitable fall will follow."
