Hoddle urges Dele Alli to dig in and win over Spurs boss Mourinho: Don't down tools!

Former Tottenham boss Glenn Hoddle has urged Dele Alli to stay and fight for his place in manager Jose Mourinho's plans.

With the arrival of club icon Gareth Bale, Alli is facing a crossroads moment with Hoddle accepting there are still significant flaws in the England star's all-round game.

Hoddle said, “We forget how young he still is. He's 24 but we think because he's been around so much that he's 27 or 28 and in the peak of his career but he's not, he's still learning.

“He's not lost his way, every player goes through this but the way Spurs are looking to play at the moment doesn't quite suit him.“When Mauricio Pochettino had the team, they had possession, pressed high up the pitch, got crosses in and possession in wide areas so Dele could time his runs into the box.

“Playing on the counter, you haven't got a chance to time it, you have to go from a deep position. I'm not sure that suits him.

“He and Jose have to talk about it and he needs to adjust his game. He struggles to retain the ball enough but he is one of the best midfield attacking players you will ever see.

“He will have to keep the ball better, play simple and look to break quickly. Downing tools or moving on would be a cop out.

“Don't down tools, pick up your tools and add to them. Become a better player in a different way and I think that's what he will do."
