Hoddle on Havertz Chelsea struggles: He's too 'nice'; Frank will be disappointed

Former Chelsea manager Glenn Hoddle believes Kai Havertz's current form problems are connected to his current role in manager Frank Lampard's system.

Havertz, after an impressive start to his Premier League career, has hit a form slump and is struggling to match the kind of consistent performances which were his trademark at former club Bayer Leverkusen.

For Hoddle, the midfielder needs to be pushed further forward by Lampard. The former England coach believing Havertz's confidence and touch will return once he starts joining Chelsea's attacks more regularly over the 90 minutes.

Speaking on his podcast, ' The Glenn Hoddle Footy Show', Hoddle said, "I look at Havertz at the moment and he's nowhere near the player he was in Germany - there's no doubt about that. His role is a bit deeper with Chelsea. But I think if we start seeing him arrive more in the penalty area we'll start seeing the best of him.

"He looks like he wants to play at a certain time and a certain pace. He is easy on the eye. He is a good player and I think there's more to come from him, I really do. But he looks like the type of player who needs some time to settle down. Maybe, on and off the pitch."

Hoddle believes Lampard would be expecting to have seen more from the Germany international by this stage in the season.

He continued: "Havertz is one I think Frank will be disappointed with. I think there's more to come. But whether he can reproduce that remains to be seen.

"It's almost like he wants to be a 'nice' player. For me, he needs to be more assertive. Assert himself on the pitch, with his running, because he will score goals.

"In Germany he was almost like an outright striker. He was scoring goals, left-foot, right-foot, headers."

Indeed, Hoddle is adamant Chelsea and Lampard's system does suit Havertz's game and he will find his feet - if given time.

He added: "Chelsea's a tieam that suits him, there's no doubt about that. I think he will get there in the end, but obviously it will take a bit of time.

"He is a good enough to adapt. But he needs to play quicker, one or two touch. And he also needs to start arriving in the penalty area more to score those goals."

Last season with Bayer Leverkusen, Havertz scored 18 goals in 45 games.
