Hoddle: All-round Soucek can do everything; this West Ham best of generation

Tottenham great Glenn Hoddle admits he's a big fan of West Ham United midfielder Tomas Soucek.

The Czech Republic international joined the Irons in January 2020 and has been outstanding for West Ham manager David Moyes ever since.

For Hoddle, Soucek is a complete midfielder, with top drawer qualities suited for both ends of the pitch.

Hoddle said on his podcast, ' The Glenn Hoddle Footy Show': "He's a modern midfield player who can do everything. He has a great stature, a good size, so he's handy defending set plays - but also good with attacking set plays. He has a bit of guile about him, he can pass the ball, keep it simple. He's not going to hit wonder passes like (Bruno) Fernandes, he keeps it econimical and distributes the ball for his team.

"But he gets in the box. He really is a box threat. He wants to get in there. He's got a bit of absolutely everything, he really has. This season he's getting better and better.

"I thought he was decent last year, but now he has added a couple of strings to his bow. He's a goalscorer from midfield and they're absolutely priceless.

"He's a good finisher, whether it's in the air or with his feet. He's a major asset to West Ham.

"He's one of those players you can build a team around. A bit like (Marouane) Fellaini for David Moyes, who he had at Everton and took to (Manchester) United, though for me he is better than Fellaini."

Hoddle also discussed West Ham's progress under David Moyes and admits he's enjoyed the football they're playing. The former England coach says key to sustaining their form will be the fitness of Michail Antonio, who has acted as a make-shift striker, though he admits he's also been won over by former Brentford attacker Said Benrahma.

He continued: "He's playing Benrahma from the start now and a lot of credit has to be given to David, he has a good squad there.

"They do look like a side which is very well balanced in how they defend - and now how they're attacking. Antonio up front, if they can keep him fit... they really don't have a replacement for him.

"But it's all based on a very solid back four. They play different systems. They all know what they're doing.

"They're still fifth (on the table) and they're there on credit because they've been playing that well.

"I know quite a few young West Ham fans and they're saying it's the best team they've seen in their generation."

While West Ham were eliminated from the FA Cup at Manchester United on Tuesday night, they sit sixth on the Premier League table due to goal difference equal on points with fifth-placed Everton.
