Ex-Chelsea whiz dubbed 'thoroughbred' after goalscoring debut

Hertha Berlin coach Ante Covic is delighted with what he's seen so far from former Chelsea striker Daishawn Redan.

Just days after his move from London, Redan scored on debut in victory over friendly opponents Fenerbahce.

Redan arrived last week and initially had to settle for a bench role against Fener on Friday.

The Holland youth international was, however, brought on halfway through the game by coach Covic and needed only 15 minutes to score the opening goal - his first for Hertha and also a first at senior level. Fellow Hertha striker Vedad Ibisevic later scored to earn the 2-1 win.

Covic shook up his system at halftime, pairing Redan (18) with veteran Ibisevic (34) in attack and was rewarded with the friendly win.

He was quoted by BILD: "His moves show he's a thoroughbred. He has an incredible shot.

"He enjoyed the Ajax school and knows how football works."

Covic warned against too high expectations because of Redan's youth.

"He's guaranteed to get a dent. We have to be there for him then."

For his part, Redan revealed he was quickly on the phone post-match as friends and family eagerly sought news about his stunning debut.

He also was quoted by BILD: "It was important for me to gather my first minutes for Hertha. Of course I was very happy about the goal. My whole family and all my friends contacted me right afterwards."

Redan spent two years with Chelsea, having been snapped up from Ajax's academy in 2017.
