Herd, Luongo on target for Villa, Ipswich in English League Cup

Australian duo Chris Herd and Massimo Luongo were both on target as their sides produced varied results in the second round of the Capital One Cup on Tuesday night.

Aston Villa midfielder Herd scored his team's second goal in the 66th minute as they eased past League One Tranmere Rovers 3-0 at Villa Park.

Herd's goal was in the middle of efforts from Fabian Delph and Darren Bent before he made way for Darren Burke in the 76th minute.

Fellow Aussie Brett Holman replaced Enda Stevens with just over 20 minutes remaining and managed to assist Bent for the third goal.

Tottenham loanee Luongo opened the scoring for Ipswich Town in the 24th minute but they were beaten when Carlisle United score twice late through Mark Beck and David Symington to force a 2-1 result at Brunton Park.

Other Aussies in League Cup action included Rhys Williams playing 74 minutes as Middlesbrough defeated Gillingham 2-0 at Priestfield Stadium, Mark Schwarzer was in goal as Fulham suffered a surprise1-0 loss to Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough and Adam Federici helped Reading come from behind twice to beat Peterborough United 3-2 at the Madejski Stadium.
