Heaton aiming to challenge De Gea, Henderson for Man Utd goalkeeper spot

Tom Heaton plans on challenging for David De Gea and Dean Henderson for Manchester United's number one goalkeeper spot.

The former England international signed on a free transfer this summer after leaving Aston Villa.

And after impressing in the friendly win over Derby County on Sunday, Heaton has outlined his ambitions for the season ahead.

"That's the plan. I've had a fair bit of experience under the belt so I can add a different dimension to the department," he told MUTV.

"There will be professional respect and support all the way through it, but personally that's the aim, everywhere I've been in my career you try and step on and get in the team.

"I'm aware of the challenge here, there's some fantastic goalkeepers, Lee Grant as well today, the young boys in Nathan Bishop and Matej Kovar, it's a fantastic goalkeeping department but personally I'll be trying to get that shirt and get in the team but at the same time making sure there's an element of support and competitiveness throughout the department."
