He's back: Why Getafe have turned to Pepe Bordalas so late in the season

Getafe CF and Pepe Bordalás have rejoined paths almost two years after parting ways.

The Alicante-born coach returns to the south of Madrid to fulfil the objective of maintaining the category and getting out of the relegation zone in which the team finds itself with seven games to go in LaLiga Santander.

After back-to-back defeats to RCD Mallorca and UD Almería in the last two matchdays, Quique Sánchez Flores has been sacked in his third spell in charge of the Madrid outfit. Last season he achieved the historic milestone of staying in LaLiga Santander after getting just one point from the first eight games (the first team to do so), but he has not had the confidence to get back on track.

Now it is Pepe Bordalás who will embark on his second spell at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez. He is the coach with the most games in the history of Getafe CF in LaLiga Santander, having spent four full seasons (153 games, adding the first of this new spell against RCD Espanyol) in the first category after winning promotion in 2016/17, after beating SD Huesca and CD Tenerife in the LaLiga SmartBank play-offs.

He also achieved the team's best ever finish in the 2018/19 season, with a creditable fifth place in LaLiga Santander that kept them in contention for Champions League qualification until the final matchday, and made it all the way to the round of 16 of the Europa League after knocking out an all-Amsterdam Ajax side the following year.

It is undoubtedly an exciting return for Los Azulones, who experienced their best days under Bordalás coaching, but the task is complicated. The start has not been as expected, as he lost his first match against RCD Espanyol after only being able to manage one full training session.

Will Bordalás succeed in keeping Getafe CF in LaLiga Santander with seven games to go?
