Former Manchester City midfielder Owen Hargreaves is convinced John Stones can still make it at the club.

Hargreaves argues the former Everton defender needs to look at Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk as an example of a centre-back who is confident on the ball but does not do too much in possession.

He said: "I think, in terms of talent, John Stones is a fabulous player but I think he needs to look at Van Dijk and the way he plays.

"Van Dijk, even though he's the best in the world, he doesn't really take chances anymore.

"He plays smartly, you rarely ever see him try crazy things and stepovers, and I think, if John Stones wants to get back to his potential, which could be one of the best centre-backs in the country, he's got to cut out the errors.

"If he plays more safely and doesn't get noticed, then he could reach his potential."
