Hamilton defeat Sunderland in friendly

Hamilton defeated Sunderland tonight to lift the preseason Wilton Cup.

Accies followed Saturday's win over Huddersfield with a well-deserved 2-1 victory to win the Wilton Cup at Victoria Park.

David Graham was on the scoresheet and young midfielder James McCarthy was later named player of the tournament, which was organised to mark Hartlepool United's centenary.

Former Aberdeen skipper Russell Anderson inadvertently gave Hamilton the first-half lead when he diverted Brain Carrigan's cross into his own net.

Accies continued to dominate, although former Celtic winger Ross Wallace caused them some problems, and Tony Stevenson struck the post after the break.

Graham burst into the box and fired past former Hibernian goalkeeper Nick Colgan to make it two and the Lanarkshire side comfortably held on after Jordan Cook's 75th-minute consolation.
