Halsey given permission to continue as top flight ref

Mark Halsey has been given the green light to continue refereeing after turning 50 years old next season, reports the Bolton News. Halsey has been included as part of the elite group of 16 officials who will take charge of Premier League matches for the 20011/12 campaign.

Despite turning 50 in July, he offered to continue past the regular retirement age, and will be subject to the stringent fitness tests laid down by referee's governing body, the Professional Game Match Officials Board.

Northants referee Peter Walton is the oldest whistle-blower in the Premier League, at 52.
