FC Groningen chief Hans Nijland has welcomed the windfall due from Virgil van Dijk's £75m move to Liverpool.
Van Dijk spent three seasons with Groningen before being sold to Celtic and the Eredivisie club will take a €800,000 cut from Southampton's sale.
"Of course, we immediately asked Celtic for a loan, which we could not resist," laughed general director Nijland in conversation with Ziggo Sport. "More will be announced next week."
The money that arrives via Celtic will not be used directly in the winter transfer window.
"We are not going to do anything with it," says Nijland. "We are going to use it to strengthen our own capital, which keeps the hand nicely in control of what we do in the future."
