Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood has been arrested on suspicion of rape and assault.
The 20-year-old remains in custody for questioning and enquiries are ongoing, Greater Manchester Police said.
Pictures and videos begun circulating on social media after a woman alleged incidents of violence against Greenwood.
It comes after Manchester United announced that Greenwood would not return to training or play any matches "until further notice".
Greater Manchester Police said it was made aware of "social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence", adding: "we can confirm a man in his 20s has since been arrested on suspicion of rape and assault".
The United academy graduate, who made his debut for the club in March 2019, signed a four-year deal in February 2021.
