Grealish: I worked on Barkley for 3 weeks about quitting Chelsea for Aston Villa

Jack Grealish admits he worked on convincing Ross Barkley about moving to Aston Villa.

England international Barkley has joined Dean Smith's side on a season-long loan from Chelsea as he looks to force his way into the England side for next summer's European Championship.

Barkley was thrown straight in against Liverpool and linked superbly with Grealish as the Villans demolished the champions, with the former Everton man scoring one in the astonishing 7-2 win.

Now, Grealish has revealed his part in convincing Barkley to make the surprise switch to Villa Park.

"I'd been speaking to him for the past three weeks trying to get him to come, messaging him every singe day and in the end I was over the moon," Grealish told the London Evening Standard. "I think he is an unbelievably talented player and I can't wait to get playing with him.

"I'm not going to sit here and say 'I persuaded him', he was asking questions about what it is like, what training and the staff are like. I was giving him good feedback. At the end of the day he wants to play, it is no secret to anyone how many players Chelsea have brought in this summer so he probably felt like he wouldn't play as much as he wanted to and that is what he wanted to do with the Euros coming up.

"I think that is a big thing, it is a statement signing," Grealish added, speaking ahead of the launch of FIFA 21. "I see bits of myself in him, the way he can receive the ball, run at players and thread passes. I can't wait to play with him because we've brought in some good signings already so it'll be interesting to play with Ross."
