Borussia Monchengladbach star Florian Neuhaus is skeptical about Spanish legend Xabi Alonso taking over as manager.

Alonso, who was a player at Liverpool, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and other top clubs, is currently working with his boyhood club Real Sociedad.

The 39-year-old was touted in the press as being set for the Monchengladbach job in the past few days.

More recent reports, however, have contradicted that statement and suggest he may not be the first choice candidate.

"I only found out about that from the media," Neuhaus told reporters.

"I won't believe it until the club officially announces it.

"Now it has been denied again.

"[Gladbach sporting director] Max Eberl will certainly make an excellent choice."
