Borussia Monchengladbach chief Max Eberl admits they've continued to push Chelsea for Andreas Christensen's return.
The Dane has spent the past two years on-loan with Gladbach, though Eberl concedes a third season is now unlikely.
Eberl said, "We have had many, intense and very good talks with Chelsea, but it was clear that the club will not give up Andreas at this stage.
"And if a new situation should arise at the end of August, there is now 30 or 40 million euros available to get us into the race."
Gladbach have added Reece Oxford on-loan from West Ham in recent weeks.
Eberl added: "We filled the positions where we wanted to do something. Also the squad has thinned. Now we are watching the market. In England, for example, it starts to move."
