Giulianelli: EXCLUSIVE - Arsenal talking with Atletico for months about Griezmann; Mustafi latest

I can now unveil Arsenal's mystery attacking transfer target...

Antoine Griezmann, born in 1991, the best player at Euro 2016 and top scorer of the competition with six goals, is the name that Arsenal are dreaming about - to build a team that can again achieve a Premier League title after so many years of drought.

There has been extended contact between Arsenal and Atletico Madrid, both during and after the Euros in France. Arsene Wenger was willing to break Arsenal's transfer record for Griezmann, but the Colchoneros seem unwilling to sell their big star for anything less than his buy out clause - €100m.

The reason why Arsenal are delaying the move for Alexandre Lacazette, of Lyon, is that, as I've already written many times, they can take their time, as they wait on Atletico to sign Diego Costa. The Chelsea striker would join Atletico to partner Kevin Gameiro.

At that moment, Wenger will try one last time for Griezmann. The last contact was when Wenger asked Atletico to be kept aware of Griezmann's availability.

But at this moment Arsenal are not so confident of getting Griezmann, that's why they're going back for Lacazette this week.

For the centre-back role, the other priority of the Gunners, the arrival of Shkodran Mustafi, of Valencia, has still a good chance of happening, though other options are available.

Arsenal are trying to delay things so that Valencia drop their price. There has been no movement since last week, the two clubs are still €5m apart in their valuation.

The backup options, as known, are Jonny Evans from West Bromwich Albion and Ashley Williams from Swansea.
