Gillingham are in talks with released Hull City striker Dean Windass.
"I have spoken to Dean, but I don't think it's going to happen if I'm honest," Gills boss Mark Stimson told Kent on Sunday.
"This time last year Dean Windass scored the winning goal to get Hull into the Premier League while we were getting relegated to League Two.
"I think credit has got to go to the club that we can get on the phone and talk to these people now - and they are interested in talking to us.
"All across the board we are looking to improve next season and people of that calibre will help us do that."
