Getafe president Torres: We should not be punished

Getafe president Angel Torres insists they don't deserve punishment after refusing to travel to Italy for their Europa League clash at Inter Milan.

Italy is in a state of lockdown and no football is allowed to be played in the country until April, other than European competitions, because of the spread of coronavirus.

Torres came out on Tuesday to state that Getafe wouldn't be travelling to Italy for the first leg of their last 16 tie with Inter no matter the consequences.

"We're not going to play, we're not going to travel to Italy, that's already decided," Torres told the press on Wednesday.

"They can't guarantee us [safety], there's a [lockdown] decree. You can't fly into Italy, we're not going to change anything.

"They've suspended the league there. We're not going to go into the epicentre. Health comes first.

"I don't understand why [UEFA] would eliminate us.

"It's a state of emergency, we're doing the right thing. Health comes first, then sport.

"I don't care about the consequences.

"What I care about is not bringing any more infection to Spain than we already have.

"Making a decision like this has consequences that we will have to accept.

"We've spent our whole lives without playing in UEFA [competitions], but I don't think there will be consequences.

"I hope that common sense prevails and that what we do is for the good of everyone."
