Gerrard delighted after first week at Aston Villa: It's gone extremely quickly

Steven Gerrard says he's enjoyed his first week in charge of Aston Villa.

Gerrard will make his debut on Saturday against Brighton.

He said, "First and foremost it is an extremely proud moment for myself. It is a real honour to be the manager of this football club.

"Although the last seven to 10 days have gone extremely quickly it has been a really happy time for me because the opportunity to be back in Premier League and the opportunity to be back close to my family were the two main reasons why this was right move for me.

“It was a difficult decision and I certainly left with a heavy heart. I built up some fantastic relationships at Rangers.

"It is a club I have immense respect for. I was given a remit three-and-a-half years ago, we went on a journey and completed that remit. Approximately 10 days ago the opportunity came to join another iconic club and it was an opportunity I could not let pass me by."

Gerrard also said: “When the call came, I pretty much knew what I was going to do because I knew it was the right move for me.

"The chance to be back in the Premier League, the best league in the world, to compete against the best coaches, against some of the best teams, the best players... I've missed the Premier League and it's great to be back.

"I was not surprised that Dean Smith was offered a job so quickly. Dean is someone I have immense respect for.

"I have been lucky enough to meet him on the odd occasion. I have heard a lot of great things about him as a man, coach, as a manager and he has left us a real good base to build on here."
