Gerrard admits: Liverpool haven't been good enough in Champions League

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard admits his side did not do enough to qualify for the Champions League Round of 16.

The Reds drew 1-1 with FC Basel at Anfield on Tuesday night to miss their chance of progressing to the knockout phase of Europe's top club competition but it was their overall showing in Group B which Gerrard felt lacked enough quality to join Real Madrid in the final 16.

"No. We haven't gone out of the competition because of our performance tonight, we've gone out because away at Basel we weren't good enough, in our last game we conceded a stupid goal towards injury time," he told ITV when asked if Liverpool deserve more.

"You always qualify over the six games and unfortunately we haven't been good enough."

Gerrard scored with an 81st-minute free-kick after Lazar Markovic was sent off 20 minutes earlier but the damage had been done when Fabian Frei fired home from 20 yards after 25 minutes for Basel.

Liverpool ended up third in their group and will now drop into the Europa League's Round of 32 while Real and Basel will kick on in the Champions League.
