Fulham boss Hughes: Zamora deserves England start

Fulham boss Mark Hughes says Bobby Zamora deserves an England start against Bulgaria.

Hughes admits he has been surprised by the striker since arriving at Craven Cottage this summer.

Zamora, 29, impressed in last weekend's 2-2 draw with Manchester United - watched by England boss Fabio Capello - and then scored twice in the 6-0 Carling Cup romp over Port Vale.

And Hughes said: "My opinion on Bobby has changed, as it has done with a number of players at this club.

"I've been surprised by the quality that is here. Bobby is very much in that group. When you come into a new situation you're not sure what level the players can achieve, but Bobby is top class.

"He didn't do himself any harm in the cameo he got last time playing for England.

"I wouldn't be surprised if he started for England.

"He had an outstanding season last year and is continuing in that form. He is the focus of our attacking play and a big factor in why we have started the season well."
