Freddy Adu: The Monaco transfer decision that blew my career - and launched Di Maria

Former USA international Freddy Adu felt there was one decision where he blew his career.

Adu is now playing in Sweden with Osterlen FF.

He recalled to The Blue Wire Podcast: “The biggest mistake I made in my career was to go on loan from Monaco to Benfica.

"I say it from my heart. It was one of those decisions that, if I could go back, I wouldn't make.

"I had three coaches in one year at Benfica. The team was in such a bad moment that I just wanted to get out of there as soon as possible, but it turned out to be the worst decision. I came to the club at the same time as (Angel) Di María and in the first year I was better than him.

"I played better than him, but I decided to go to Monaco. Di María stayed at Benfica and ... Guess what? He had the opportunity to play with another coach who came later, became a starter and in one or two years he went to Real Madrid. I made the worst possible decision for my career and that is my greatest regret."
