Deschamps hails Arsenal kid Guendouzi: The modern midfielder

France coach Didier Deschamps says he always planned not to ask too much from Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi.

Ahead of Les Bleus' qualifying matches for Euro2020 against Albania and Andorra, Deschamps called up the youngster last week to replace the injured Paul Pogba, of Manchester United. It marked Guendouzi's first selection to the senior Les Bleus' squad.

For Deschamps, the youngster's call-up was well deserved - though with a qualifier.

Quoted by Foot Mercato, when speaking to a pre-match media conference ahead of victory over Albania, he explained, "Do not ask too much, he's a young player, who is still the Espoirs generation, who plays a lot of matches with Arsenal where there is strong competition."

However, Deschamps has no doubts about the potential of the player. Guendouzi may only have one full season under his belt in the Premier League, but the former Lorient starlet has done enough for Deschamps to call him into the defending world champions.

He continued: "He's the modern midfielder, box to box as they say there, with a lot of power and technical quality too. He's there. What I expect from young people is that they bring this freshness, this dynamism.

"He is a very young player but with a very big potential."

For the defeat of Albania, Guendouzi took in the 4-1 rout from the bench. But there is every chance of the midfielder being handed a first cap this week against Andorra.
