France coach Deschamps explains recalling Real Madrid striker Benzema

France coach Didier Deschamps has explained recalling Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema to his Euros squad.

The forward had been left out since his suspected involvement in a sex tape scandal, involving former teammate Mathieu Valbuena, but his performances with Los Blancos this season have forced Deschamps to change his mind and include him this summer.

"I've already faced difficult situations with other players," Deschamps said to TF1. "But the French team doesn't belong to me. France is above everything else.

"I cannot say what we spoke about, but the most important thing is that he's back and we've reached this decision by speaking.

"There will always be competition [with Benzema and Olivier Giroud], but France are better now with Benzema."

France could now line up with Kylian Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann and Benzema leading their attack, which would be one of the most fearsome frontlines around. Deschamps, though, wouldn't say how he plans to use them.

"I'm not going to give any details," Deschamps said. "On paper, it's as good as other options. We have a lot.

"With quality, intelligence and talent is easier. I love attacking players and that's why I've chosen eight forwards."
