France coach Deschamps adamant Chelsea veteran Giroud deserves his place

France coach Didier Deschamps insists Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud deserves his place in the squad.

Deschamps has gone with Giroud ahead of Sevilla attacker Wissam Ben Yedder and Arsenal's Alexandre Lacazette.

And he insisted: "He plays with his club, maybe less, but he scores in the Europa League among others (he is the current top scorer of the competition with nine goals).

"He has already worked with a reduced playing time before. Now it's decreased a little more. Nevertheless, Olivier remains efficient and keeps pace. I made this choice today, but that does not mean that in two, four or five months ... He is one of the players who are advancing in age (32 years) but there is no, for the moment, worry about it.

"Olivier remains someone very effective with the Blues (33 goals). He knows the team of France, is very attached to it. These are more things for him."
