Former Vancouver forward Salgado leaves MLS for Tigres

Omar Salgado has left New York City FC to sign with Liga MX club Tigres UANL.

The 21-year old Texas-born forward ended a four-year spell with Vancouver Whitecaps when he was traded to MLS expansion franchise NYCFC in December but has now been on-sold to 2014 Apertura runners-up Tigres.

Salgado holds Mexican citizenship which will allow Tigres to add him to their roster as a domestic player even though he has represented the US at youth level.

Of the move, Salgado told MLSsoccer.com: "I felt like I needed a new start.

"Things with Vancouver didn't work out the right way and a move was the best thing for me. I'm glad that it's to a big club like Tigres."

Vancouver, who selected Salgado with pick one in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft, chose to trade Salgado to New York City earlier in December in order not to lose him for nothing which has emerged as the case after the deal with NYCFC allowed both clubs to share the fee paid by Tigres.

"If we left Omar unprotected in the Expansion Draft, we would have most likely lost him for nothing," explained Whitecaps FC head coach Carl Robinson when the trade was made.
