Former Newcastle star Solano drops down for coaching role

Former Newcastle United winger Nolberto Solano has joined Northern League side Newcastle Benfield as a first-team coach, following his retirement, reports BBC Sport. The 37-year-old Peru international, who won 95 caps and made 466 league and cup appearances, ended a spell at Hartlepool United to take up the post.

"I am delighted that we have been able to attract such a big name," chairman Jimmy Rowe said.

"I believe that Nobby's experience in the game will bring benefit."

The Northern League Division One is Step Five of the non-league pyramid.

Solano opted to retire from professional football after Hartlepool boss Neale Cooper confirmed the winger was no longer part of his first-team plans.

In addition to the role, Solano will study for Uefa licences.
