Fletcher hopes Mourinho watching but admits Barnsley stay an option

Manchester United youngster Ashley Fletcher is hoping to have caught the attention of manager Jose Mourinho with his performances during his loan spell with Barnsley.

Fletcher, who was supposedly ahead of Marcus Rashford in the pecking order at United, joined Barnsley on a loan deal in January and that prompted ex-manager Louis van Gaal to hand Rashford his senior debut in February.

The 20-year-old, who scored for Barnsley in their 3-1 play-off final win over Millwall on Sunday, admits that extending his loan spell is also an option for him.

He said: "I hope if Jose [Mourinho] was watching the play-off final it might have given him something to smile about.

"I'd like to think that some of us youngsters might do a job for him but Manchester United is a huge club and have to spend big money to compete for the Premier League title.

"Part of you thinks 'it could have been me' if I hadn't gone on loan. But football is funny like that. I am just very proud of what I have done since I came to Barnsley, and staying is an option."
