Oldham missed out on their most famous fan returning to play for the Latics when Paul Scholes decided to retire whilst playing for Manchester United. The 36-year-old, who is a lifelong Latics fan, had spoken previously about the possibility of playing for the club at the end of his career.
He told BBC Radio Manchester: "If Oldham would have been a possibility and I still felt great physically then I probably would have played on."
"The decision I made to retire was just the way I was feeling."
Instead of switching to Boundary Park, where Scholes still visits as a spectator, he will now take up a coaching role at Old Trafford.
"If I couldn't go to another club and play well and contribute to another team then I didn't see the point in doing that," he added.
