FFA lauds former Socceroos midfielder Holman

Official release from Football Federation Australia

Football Federation Australia (FFA) today acknowledged the contribution made to the Socceroos by Brett Holman following the 30-year-old's decision to retire from international football on the eve of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Holman played 63 internationals for the Socceroos following his debut against Bahrain in 2006 and was a member of the Socceroos squad at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

It was in South Africa where Holman was at the peak of his powers, scoring goals against Ghana and Serbia to be just the second Australian to score two goals at the FIFA World Cup, following Tim Cahill's twin strike against Japan in 2006.

"Brett's decision to retire from international football brings down the curtain on a distinguished career with the Socceroos and we would like to recognise Brett for what achieved in a Socceroo shirt," said FFA CEO David Gallop.

"After starting his career as a grassroots player in Western Sydney, Brett scaled the heights of international football and will be forever remembered for his goals at the 2010 FIFA World Cup when the Socceroos went within a whisker of qualifying for the second round in South Africa.

"Brett is another shining example of the pathway football offers young people from the grassroots to the world stage and we look forward to publicly acknowledging his contribution to our game."

Socceroo Head Coach Ange Postecoglou also recognised Holman's achievements in the Socceroo shirt.

"I'd like to congratulate Brett on his Socceroo career and applaud the contribution he made to the team during his seven years with the National Team," Postecoglou said. "He is one of a few Australian players who can proudly say they scored a goal for the Socceroos at the World Cup and his achievements will sit nicely in Socceroo history."
