Feyenoord veteran Kuyt understands Gerrard retirement decision

Feyenoord attacker Dirk Kuyt can understand former Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard announcing his retirement.

Kuyt is 36 like Gerrard, but continues to enjoy playing as captain of Feyenoord, who were beaten 4-0 at Manchester United in the Europa League.

But he acknowledges it was the right time for Gerrard to call it a day.

"I'm the same age but I am still enjoying the game too much," he told the Daily Mail.

"But for him, a Liverpool legend for so many years and finished his career there 18 months ago, I guess it was the right time for him.

"He had done everything in football, he meant so much to the game and to Liverpool and he can be proud of a great career and I think it is the right time for him to focus on other things in football. We hope he is still involved in the game and I wish him all the best.

"For me, he was the best player I ever played with. I played with many great strikers like Suarez, Van Nistelrooy or Robben, but he was a midfielder who had everything."
